Ukrainian Rescue - Maya

Maya’s Story: From Conflict to Care

Maya’s journey began in Ukraine, where she lived with her littermates before the outbreak of the recent war between Russia and Ukraine. As the conflict escalated, Maya was removed from her home and taken to a local dog rescue for safety. Although the rescue provided shelter, Maya struggled to cope with the busy environment—especially after her brother, Jack, was adopted and left the centre.

Recognising her increasing anxiety, the rescue contacted Anne and Michael, the couple who had adopted Jack. They expressed concerns about Maya’s wellbeing and suggested that she might thrive better if reunited with her brother. Without hesitation, Anne and Michael agreed to take Maya into their family.

Maya was transported from Ukraine to her new home in Bolton, where she joined a household already dedicated to rescuing animals. Alongside Jack and another Ukrainian rescue dog, Amiee, Anne and Michael also care for seven cats, each of whom has experienced trauma or abandonment. Their home is a sanctuary for animals who need patience, understanding, and stability.

Settling Into Her New Life

Maya arrived in Bolton in January 2026. Despite the warm welcome, she found the transition overwhelming. She refused to leave the house and isolated herself in Michael’s bedroom, only venturing outside when guided on a slip lead for toilet breaks.

Concerned for her emotional wellbeing, Anne and Michael reached out to McKenzie at UltraPaws for support. They hoped he could help Maya gain confidence and also care for Maya, Jack, and Amiee while they travelled to Lanzarote.

Before attempting any walks, McKenzie spent several face‑to‑face visits building trust with Maya. On Friday 1st May 2026, she finally took her first walk with him—a significant milestone for a dog who had been too frightened to step beyond the doorway.

Progress Through Patience

Maya is now staying with McKenzie, alongside Jack, Amiee, and his two dogs—one of whom, by coincidence, was also rescued from the same Ukrainian shelter as Maya. This familiar connection has helped her settle more quickly.

Since 1st May, Maya has been enjoying daily walks, including visits to local country parks, riverside paths, and open green spaces. Her confidence is steadily growing. She has begun to show her affectionate side, enjoying cuddles on the sofa, and she is now taking herself into the garden independently without needing a slip lead.

Anne and Michael receive daily updates, including photos, videos, and even a WhatsApp video call where they watched Maya exploring a local country park—something that would have been unimaginable just weeks earlier.

Looking Ahead

Maya’s journey is far from over, and she still has work to do as she continues to build trust and confidence. But for now, she is safe, content, and surrounded by familiar faces—both human and canine—who are committed to helping her heal.

Her story is a testament to resilience, patience, and the power of compassionate care.
